What is love?

What is love? Other than being a catchy Haddaway song, it’s a question that people wonder about a lot. According to dictionary.com love is: a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. So, love is a feeling, but it doesn’t just end there. Love requires action- because love is a verb.

John 15:12-13 put it this way: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

So, if you want to know what love is look at Jesus. He willingly laid down His life for people that hated Him. He died for sinners, not because we are worthy or because we were looking for Him, but because He loved us. He wasn’t content with us going to Hell, but He made a way for us to be able to be reconciled with God again. That is love.

So, look at your life. Do you love others the same way that God loves you? Are you taking opportunities to lay down your life for the people around you? I know that I fall short of this everyday, so it’s a good thing that God does love us and doesn’t give up on us when we fail.

My question to you is: Do you try to love others the way that God loves you?
