Some humble pie

I’m not sure about you, but I am very good at being, well, arrogant. I’m quite talented at making myself look good, usually at the expense of someone else. Bragging is a natural skill of mine. In the Bible, if anyone had a reason to brag, it was David. He defeated many thousands of men in war, he was King! He had all the money, women, and power that he would ever need, but David wasn’t boastful about it.

In 1 Chronicles 17:16-27 David is praying to God. While I was reading his prayer I was struck by his use of the word ‘servant’. In those 11 verses, he refers to himself as God’s servant 10 times! In his prayer David was focused on God, and bringing God honor, instead of building himself up.

In relation to God, we can only be humble before Him-the Creator of the world. David understood God’s holiness and by contrast, our sinfulness. Because of this, he was able to approach God with the proper attitude.

Psalm 138:6 says:

‘For though the LORD is exalted, Yet He regards the lowly, But the haughty He knows from afar.’

So, how have you been coming to God? Arrogant and prideful, or humble and submissive like David did?
