Cover That Up!

This morning I began to read through the book of Ezekiel and as I was reading I couldn’t help but wonder why the angels in Ezekiel 1 were covering their bodies. One set of wings was spread out touching the wings of the others, but the other set was covering their bodies. Angels don’t sin, so they have nothing to “hide” from like we do. I wonder if it’s because they are inferior to God, so they cover themselves as a sign of reverence or respect for him.

If angels have to cover themselves from the glory of God, how much more do we need to cover ourselves? The good news is that’s what Jesus does: he covers us so that we can approach the father boldly! (Jude 24) We don’t need to try and cover ourselves or our sin from God, because Christ’s sacrifice was perfect and eternal. Thank you Jesus!

Hebrews discusses the sacrifice of Jesus in detail. Hebrews 10:4 says “For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” So clearly, the Old Testament way of sacrificing animals couldn’t eternally save someone, but the writer goes on to explain what Jesus established.

Hebrews 10:11-14 continues:

“And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”

I am overwhelmed today at the fact that Jesus died for me. For me! I don’t deserve it, I don’t deserve his love, yet he freely lavishes it upon me. He doesn’t just love me a little bit. He doesn’t love me when it’s convenient. He didn’t love me before and then change his mind. No! He loves me and will continue to love me passionately. And the same is true for you. Christ died for every sinner… which means every person. We all mess up, we’ve all fallen short of God’s standard. But Jesus never did. He is perfect. So his sacrifice is perfect. He took my place, my punishment, so that I could have a relationship with God. He did the same thing for you. That’s truly amazing!

If you don’t know Christ, if you haven’t made him Lord of your life all you have to do is acknowledge that you’re a sinner, that Jesus died for your sins, ask for forgiveness, and make Jesus Lord over your life. Romans 10: 9 says “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” This is the first step in “repentance” which is just turning away from your sins and going toward God.

If you know Christ as your Lord, rejoice in what he’s done for you! Remember what he’s done for you throughout your day. Praise the Lord throughout your day, because he is worthy of all praise!
