Thankfulness: Peace

As a kid, I loved the sixties and the seventies; I was (and still am) a hippie at heart. As a child, I wanted to don all of the items appropriate for a flower child to wear. I loved the smiley faces, the lava lamps (I had several), the flowers, and the psychedelic colors, but most of all I loved peace signs. I would draw peace signs all over the place, I had patches on my pants and backpacks, I wanted people to know that I was a fan of peace.

I thought that the symbol denoted a perfect ideal, but I now realize that peace is provided by a person, not by a lofty ideal.

And he will be called
     Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
     there will be no end.

Jesus came to bring peace. His life and death guaranteed that we could have a relationship with God, thus creating peace where there had been nothing but distance and discord. This is a true image and example of peace, where it was absolutely impossible to have before. Our peace with God allows us to have peace with others and peace within ourselves.

I am immensely thankful for true peace, not peace that looks good on the surface. I’m thankful that we can be peacemakers in a world that’s in desperate need for peace. Have you ever thought about that before? We are children of God, we have his DNA running through our veins, so we are agents of peace. In the midst of chaos and disorder we can choose to tap into that peace and bring a calm to the situation. We can confront things that are wrong and bring peace where strife or disorder once existed.

I am thankful for the peace of God that passes all understanding. In times of stress and doubt and ambiguity, the Prince of Peace will guard my heart and my mind as I continue to submit to him. As I recommit my heart, my thoughts, my actions, my intentions, day by day and hour by hour, I can trust the peace that comes over me when I’m in his presence. I am thankful for peace in the midst of storms.

Lord, you are the Prince of Peace! You are the reason we can have peace and relationship with you! Forgive us for the times when we’ve been less than peaceful and have shirked off the responsibility of making peace. Thank you that your peace is always accessible to us. Please guard our hearts and our minds with your peace today as we go about our day. Help us to be peacemakers, even when it might be unpopular. Thank you for being the perfect example in how we should live. Amen!
