When I say “signs” I’m not talking about the Mel Gibson movie about the aliens making designs in a corn field. I’m talking about the little things that you see from time to time that make you feel special and loved.
For me, the rain is that thing. I love rain. If it’s dark and cold and dreary and rainy you can bet that I’m in a good mood. My eyes light up and a smile stretches across my face when I begin to hear the pitter patter of raindrops on the roof. Rain makes me want to create and explore and enjoy and rest all at the same time. Many of the significant spiritual moments in my life happened while it was raining, which brings immense joy to my heart. Every time it rains, I think of it as a gift just for me. I know that’s a selfish viewpoint, clearly showing that I have an inflated sense of self, but it makes me feel special nonetheless.
God has a history of setting things as signs of his covenant promise. Genesis recounts the story of when God flooded the earth and saved only Noah and his family. After the flood had ended and the waters had receded, God said:
“This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and everything living around you and everyone living after you. I’m putting my rainbow in the clouds, a sign of the covenant between me and the Earth. From now on, when I form a cloud over the Earth and the rainbow appears in the cloud, I’ll remember my covenant between me and you and everything living, that never again will floodwaters destroy all life. When the rainbow appears in the cloud, I’ll see it and remember the eternal covenant between God and everything living, every last living creature on Earth.”
For me, the rain reminds me of God’s presence and love and grace. What are some signs in your life? Is there something, that when you see it, just floods your heart and soul with gratitude? Is there something that makes you more aware of his presence?
I am thankful that God is always speaking to us through not only his Word, but creation. Everyday is a beautiful outpouring of his love if we’re willing to take a few moments to pay attention. I am thankful for the signs he shares to remind us of his promises. I am so thankful for a God who cares.
Lord, you are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Nothing and no one compares to you! Forgive us for the times we’ve lived narrowly, ignoring your signs. Thank you that you are consistently displaying your love for us regardless of if we see it or not. Thank you for the signs that you use each and every day to remind us of your promises. Help us to see these things today as we walk with you. Amen!
