I enjoy doing yoga, it helps relax me while simultaneously strengthening my muscles and increasing flexibility — talk about a win-win! In some of her videos, Adriene (of Yoga with Adriene) talks about getting rid of that which is no longer serving you. This is a phrase that has stuck with me and has infiltrated my thinking and prayers.
What are the things that we keep around that no longer serve us? In the Bible, these are those things that “so easily entangle us” that Paul talks about in Hebrews 12:1-2. These are those things that weigh us down and keep us from running after God with all we have.
This is a season in which God is stripping those things away. He’s inviting us to shed those things that aren’t in our lives or hearts for our benefit. He’s asking us to release certain weights and experience the freedom that comes from Him.
This isn’t easy or a pleasant process, it requires openness and obedience and a willingness to go after God instead of complacently remaining with our sins and dysfunctions and struggles.
I’m keeping this post short to give us time to examine our hearts and your lives and let God bring those things to the surface that he wants us to be rid of.
May this be our prayer:
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV)
How have you experienced shedding in past seasons?
How have you seen God’s goodness in those times of shedding?
