Have you ever had a dream? Something you longed for more than anything in the world? It’s that desire residing in the depths of your being, whether it’s expressed or left unstated. Do you have yours in mind?
Okay, let’s begin!
In the Bible, Hannah was a woman who had a desire, something she wanted more than anything else in the world. She longed for children when she had none. More than that, her rival kept popping out kid after kid with no signs of stopping. Hannah was desperate and she was willing to do anything to fulfill her God-given desire to be a mother.
She took this longing to the Lord and, in the end, he came through for her. God gave her a child! What an amazing God we serve!
“…I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”
And he worshiped the Lord there.” 1 Samuel 1:26-28 (ESV)
How insane is that?!
Can you imagine being Hannah? Her biggest dream was to be a mom. She prayed for this for years and finally, when the dream became a reality, she gave up the thing she had so desperately been seeking. Not only was this child her deepest desire, it was her own flesh and blood. He was her only kid and she entrusted him to the Lord. Talk about a woman of incredible wisdom and strength!
Hannah was an amazing woman who held the things in her life loosely. Honestly, this is something I struggle with. When I get something, especially something I’ve wanted for a long time, I have a hard time letting it go. I struggle to trust God with the dreams I have, though I hold other things much more loosely.
Are you holding tightly onto anything that God has given you?
Is there anything that he’s asking you to give up and give back to him?
I would encourage you to be like Hannah and trust God’s plan for your life over the strength you can muster to hold on yourself. As Hannah found out, his plans are better than our own and his thoughts are so much higher than we can imagine.
