When the directives for shelter in place were first issued for my area and I was driven inside my home, I made a promise to myself: I was not going to spend this time trying to reach the end of Netflix. I was determined to not become a slothful couch potato, but would try to care for myself instead. I made a plan to read books, go for walks, paint, draw, and create. I wanted to use this time to learn something new or improve my habits. And while I have watched a lot of movies recently, I’ve also done a ton of reading and breathed in a whole lot of fresh air.
For the past few years, I’ve shared with you some of the most impactful books that I’ve read recently. But this year, I’m focusing on those I’ve read during my stay-at-home time.
These books have all challenged and encouraged me in some way and I hope that they will do the same for you. Some are funny and light, others are weighty and serious, but all have provided value to me.
In the middle of these other books about life and faith, I’m also going to be sharing about my newest devotional which will be available soon! It’s called Thankful: Moving from Superficial Gratitude to a Lifestyle of Thanksgiving. In it, I share 30 different things I am grateful for. Some of them you might expect, like nature or wisdom or community. Others might be unexpected like pain or failure or endings. As I’ve seen how God has moved in my own heart and life through the words written by these other amazing authors, I’ve been praying that he will move similarly through this devotional.
Even in the midst of quarantine, I am reminded that God is so good and he loves us more than we can fathom. In the face of loss and heartbreak, he is with us, mourning alongside us, not rushing us to get through it. He is restoring identities and healing the broken parts of us. And as dreams are shattered and futures look bleak, he is still on the throne and knows our future from our past.
Quarantine and social distancing are hard. I hope that these books will encourage, challenge, and inspire in the midst of a difficult season.

My father-in-law compiled his memories of Vietnam as a gift to his children and grandchildren. I was moved and inspired as I read it!
